August 16, 2022by Carissa Harrison in Announcements

In honour of CheckingIn’s Squamish Nation partnership launch, we will be featuring Indigenous community leaders! This week's honouree is Eileen Guss.

Eileen's Story:

Eileen Guss is a prominent figure in her Indigenous community. Her ancestral roots are both Squamish and Cowichan. She is currently an intake worker for Yúustway's Community Health and Wellness team. However, Eileen has been steadily and passionately strengthening Indigenous communities with her work since 1992.

Family is highly important in Eileen's life. Between her eleven children, fifteen grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren, her hands are extremely full. Even with her busy family life, Eileen finds the time to give back to her community.

Eileen's Community Impact:

Eileen is most proud of her three years working as an Elder Mentor for the Squamish Nation Trade Centre. In this position, Eileen would guide community members on the path that best suited them. She continues to provide resources, advice, and support to individuals struggling with mental illness, substance abuse, and more. Eileen possesses a lifetime of wisdom that she readily and generously shares with anyone that crosses her path.
