Employee Engagement Calendar - February 2023

February 9, 2023by Carissa Harrison in Workplace Wellbeing

Important dates and employee engagement ideas for the month of February.

Black History Month: February 1st - 28th

February was declared Black History Month in the United States in 1976. Since then, other nations such as Canada and the United Kingdom have also dedicated the month of February to increasing awareness of Black History. Black History Month is a way to spark conversations about accomplishments in the Black community and anti-racism efforts, as well as to honour those who have been victims of racist attacks, microaggressions, or structural inequality.

  • Speak with your team about how your current DEI plan can be improved.

Groundhog Day - February 2nd

Groundhog Day is a beloved North American tradition predicting the beginning of spring. Groundhog Day derives from an urban legend that states if the groundhog sees his shadow and retreats to his burrow, cold weather will persist into March. If he doesn't see his shadow, spring will begin.
Engagement Ideas
  • As a fun activity, follow this year's Groundhog Day findings with your team.

World Cancer Day - February 4th

World Cancer Day is an international day marked on February 4th to raise awareness about the severity of cancer and to encourage its prevention, detection, and treatment. Cancer remains one of the most grueling illnesses to endure, yet scientists are still searching for a more effective cure. This World Cancer Day we ask that you offer your time or financial support to those battling cancer.
Engagement Ideas
  • Take action with your team through one of the recommendations given by the official foundation behind World Cancer Day.
  • Offer your time and support to those who are currently battling cancer and their loved ones.

Valentine's Day - February 14th

February 14th marks the celebration of Valentine's Day. Originally a Catholic holiday honouring Saint Valentine, today it is celebrated globally as a day of love and romance. While February 14th can provide a great opportunity to honour and cherish loved ones, we want to acknowledge that it can be a difficult time for many. This year, we encourage you to practice self-love and self-care, in addition to demonstrating your love for others.

Engagement Ideas
  • Dedicate February 14th to self-care.
  • Spend time with the people that are most important to you, whether that is a romantic partner, friends, or family.

Presidents' Day (U.S.) - February 20th

Presidents' Day is a federal holiday in the United States that commemorates past presidents as well as specifically honouring George Washington and the history of the American presidency. Many private American businesses and public institutions take the day off to mark the occasion.

Engagement Ideas
  • Take today to educate yourself on the changes made by past presidents and leaders.
  • Take time to reflect on where you stand politically and the differences you would like to see in society moving forward.

Family Day (B.C., Canada) - February 20th

In certain provinces in Canada, February 20th is dedicated to spending time with family! Whether or not you have been given the day off, we encourage you to show those you consider family how important they are to you!
Engagement Ideas
  • Offer the day off or a half-day to your team, so they can spend time with family.
